Think outside the box, SVNR Interior Design students told

INTERIOR design students of Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School (SVNR) were encouraged to think outside the box when planning for their final year coursework.

“The first thing our instructor told us was to come up with buildings that are not common in that (chosen) area,” said a final year student Md Yusri Hj Duraman.

He came up with an automotive workshop with an ‘aggression’ concept where he focused mostly on the usage of metals and steels.

Students were asked to choose a site of their interest at Kiarong commercial area for their proposed project.

The one-semester coursework was put into an exhibition which aimed to establish a concrete network between courses offered at SVNR especially Interior Design with other related industries.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, Fairuz Zabidi Hj Shahrum, an interior designer instructor at SVNR, said that one of the criteria they consider would be the logic relation between the concept of their project and the project itself.

“We looked in terms of the structure and their rendering skills... whether the building can be constructed or not,” said the instructor.

He added that students submitted their work in stages throughout the semester before they could produce the final outcome.

Another final year student, Siti Noraqilah Hj Saman proposed an Arts and Design centre whose overall design was based on the concept of butterfly revolution.

“Each area in the building holds different theme due to the nature of the life stages of a butterfly; from an egg, caterpillar, pupa and eventually to an adult butterfly,” said Siti Noraqilah.

Some students had also contributed their ideas and work to architectural companies as part of their freelance. They acquired knowledge and experience during their work attachment last year.

“I helped to design the canteen of a private company which is currently under construction,” said Liyana Watey Mohammad who proposed a beauty clinic project.

Md Iqbal Rezza Abd Rahim chose “100 plus” concept for his gym project due to the fact that gym goers would normally consume isotonic drink to energise.

Parents of the final year students also came to look at their children’s projects as a sign of support for them.

Present to officiate the event was the Director of Gemilang Latif Associates Mahri Hj Latif.

The exhibition saw the participation of 36 students of the Diploma in Interior Design course who are currently in their final year.

Members of the public are welcome to visit the exhibition held at SVNR multipurpose hall until May 23.
