A BRUNEI benchmark for engineering competency that is on par with global standards is being developed to help local engineers achieve international recognition.

According to Mohd Nazri Mohd Yusof, vice-president of the engineering division for Brunei’s Association for Surveyors, Engineers and Architects (PUJA), PUJA plans to achieve ‘mutual recognition’ from other leading engineering institutions such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers UK (IMechE UK) or the Institution of Engineering and Technology UK (IET UK).

This mutual recognition would mean that the corporate membership of PUJA engineers will be seen as being on par with professional membership of these other globally recognised institutions.

“This is not easy. Both parties must be convinced that they are peers,” he told The Brunei Times.

Mohd Nazri said this is PUJA’s programme for the next two years.

“This is our vision, that if you are a member of PUJA, we would like to see that you are recognised anywhere in the world that you are highly reliable and you have the right competency, right qualification and right knowledge to be a professional engineer,” he said.

Mohd Nazri said that having a high quality benchmark is necessary to achieve that kind of recognition.

“Because of our links to the UK, we will look first at the UK specifications and see whether we are able to adopt some of those recommendations,” he said.

He added that PUJA is also looking at other specifications around the world that may be adopted into the Brunei Benchmark.

PUJA is also mulling to streamline the application process into its engineering division. Mohd Nazri said PUJA wants the process to focus more on peer review from other members of the organisation.

Mohd Nazri stressed that there will be a lot of hard work on the path to raising the status and recognition of Bruneian engineers globally. They had already begun on the path, as they have recently signed Memorandum of Understanding with both the IET UK and IMechE UK to work more closely together.

He said that they have also paid visit to these institutions as well as others in the United Kingdom to have ‘frank discussions’ on how they can achieve their goals of global recognition.

While there is still much to be done, Mohd Nazri expressed confidence that such mutual recognition was something that is achievable within a few years.

PUJA is Brunei’s association for surveyors, engineers and architects. The organisation aims to promote, foster and advance the science and art of their respective professions in line with aims and objectives of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
