PUJA (Brunei) Engineer Division has successfully organized its Engineers’ Night at the Royal Berkshire Hall, Polo Riding Club, Jerudong on 8th April 2011. In conjunction with the Engineers Night, award ceremony to 14 ASEAN Engineer Registered (AER) Awardees was held. Guest of Honor was Yang Berhormat, Pehin Dato Paduka Hj Suyoi bin Hj Osman, the Minister of Development. The Secretary General of ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (AFEO), Professor Dato Hj Dr Keirzul Abdullah was also being invited by Engineer Division to present certificates to the new 14 AER.
As published in Borneo Bulletin dated 9th April 2011;
The Minister of Development stressed the importance of improving the sustainability of the build environment in Brunei, and spoke of collaboration with PUJA (the Association of Architects, Surveyors and Engineers) and the Ministry of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office in working to that end during a speech that night.
The Minister, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman said, "The President of PUJA (B), Dato Paduka Awang Haji Idris bin Haji Abas, raised the issue on promoting Green Building and Energy Efficiency and Conservation programmes at the recent 7th State Legislative (LegCo) Session."
"I am delighted to hear this since it signifies PUJA joining hands with the Ministry of Development towards building a better future through sustainable development."
"The Ministry of Development alongside the Ministry of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office, is in the midst of preparing relevant programmes and has engaged in some activities in view of supporting a ’Green’ living."
He went on to urge engineers everywhere to embrace the continuous challenge of improving the sustainability of build environment by changing the way it is planned, designed, built, maintained and used.
Citing a programme launched by the World Bank in June 2009 called Eco2 Cities: Ecological Cities as Economic Cities, the minister said that urbanisation is the single greatest development opportunity and challenge that, while enabling economic growth, contributes to pollution, congestion and environmental as well as, social economical challenges.
"It is therefore timely that the 29th Conference of Asean Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO) being organised by the Engineer Division in November this year carries the theme, `Sustainable Urbanisation - Engineering Challenges and Opportunities’," he continued. "This is an important message to the engineers who will be addressing the challenges in building and managing cities that are ecologically and economically sustainable."
He described the November conference, which is to be held in Brunei, as an opportunity to exchange ideas and knowledge as well as to showcase engineering achievements and contributions to nation building.
During his speech, the minister also spoke of the performance of the engineering sector, with particular emphasis on the construction industry, which he described as the second largest industry in Brunei Darussalam, and as a reliable barometer of the country’s economic development.
"If we do not construct to provide efficient and reliable infrastructures, we have no economy," he added, while stressing that engineers play a vital role in nation building. -
Last night’s event, organised by PUJA’s Engineering Division, was held to celebrate the Engineer’s Night as well as to present the awards for the Asean Engineers Registered (AER) engineers by the Asean Federation of Engineering Organisation.
As the Chairman of PUJA’s Engineer Division, Hj Suhaimi Gafar also spoke at the event, where he thanked his team and fellow members of PUJA for their passion, commitment and hard work so far.
As PUJA is a member association of AFEO, PUJA members who wish to apply for the AER recognition require acceptance through AFEO beforehand.
To date, 29 PUJA members have been awarded AER, and according to PUJA, the AER’s objective is to promote mobility for engineers among the ASEAN member states to allow engineers to practise in other countries with mutual understanding of engineering abilities.
