Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei plays host to the 29th Conference of Asean Federation of Engineering Organisation (CAFEO) this year, convening hundreds of engineering professionals from 10 Asean member states, plus Japan, Hong Kong, Korea and China.

This also marks the Sultanate’s fourth time in hosting the event after the last one in 2001.

This year’s conference, carrying the theme ’Sustainable Urbanisation: Engineering Challenges and Opportunities’, is organised by the Brunei Surveyors, Engineers and Architects Association’s (PUJA’s) Engineers Division.

Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Suyoi bin Hj Osman, the Minister of Development, officiated the programme yesterday at Rizqun International Hotel. He also led the AFEO traditional march of entry with flag-bearers from each member country into the Function Hall.

Meanwhile, in his opening speech, the Chairman of AFEO (2011) cum President of PUJA (B), Dato Paduka Hj Idris bin Hj Abas, said that the CAFE() could serve as a platform, directly or indirectly, for Bruneian professionals to be able to leverage its benefits.

"It is the vision of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Government to prepare its people to become well-educated and highly skilled in all sectors by the year 2035," he said.

However, he added, there are still many foreseen challenges ahead. "The accomplishment of this vision depends on the professionals’ commitment and best practices as well as our coaching and mentoring of the young ones, who form the backbone of the nation’s future."

Touching on PUJA’s achievements, he said that he was pleased and proud that they have expanded a dimension of networking and cooperation with affiliated regional organisations and counterparts in Asean.

"We are able to share knowledge and skills and draw lessons from our neighbouring experts and their experiences. It is also one of PUJA’s objectives to develop its members as well as the professions of surveyors, engineers and architects in Brunei," he added.

The day also featured three guest keynote speakers who are distinguished individuals involved in sustainable developments and with engineering expertise. They comprised Philip Yea from Singapore, Dato Paduka Prof Keizrul Abdullah of Malaysia and Debra Lam from Hong Kong.

The minister later toured an exhibition at The Mall’s Atrium, which showcased various advancements in engineering technology, as well as the activities and progress of engineering organisations in Asean countries and engineering companies.

Members of the public are also welcome to view the exhibition, which will run until today.

All member countries, represented by their respective national engineering bodies, were given an opportunity to present their reports at yesterday’s conference, highlighting their successfully implemented engineering achievements.

The sharing of knowledge and experiences will hopefully benefit all participating engineers in the programme.During the CAFEO event, the 10 Asean engineering member organisations also held various meetings relating to developments in the engineering field, human capacity developments, as well as sustainable developments and challenges in urbanisations.

The last day of CAFEO today will see technical seminars with 55 presenters from all the Asean countries, including 12 speakers from Brunei.

As part of their itinerary, the organising committee is also arranging technical visits for overseas delegates to engineering project sites as well as a social programme to visit other places of interest.
