CPD Talk: 'The Day After Tomorrow'

As published in Brunei Times on 25th July 2012;

IN A BID to promote the profession of surveyors, engineers and architects in the country, the Brunei Association of Surveyors, Engineers and Architects (PUJA) hosted a talk on "Continuing Professional Development (CPD)" for its members and the public at the Ministry of Development (MoD) Training Centre yesterday.

"We feel that CPD talks like this will promote not just the profession but also new approaches and new methodologies to the practices in Brunei, especially in the construction industry and also relevant to the profession of engineering," said Mohammad Nazri Mohammad Yusof, vice-president at PUJA, at the sidelines of the talk.

"Apart from that, this is a series of activities organised by the various divisions under PUJA which will be beneficial for the members. And also, as with CPD talks, each member affiliated with any professional organisation is required to have continuing education," he added.

He said the CPD talks ensured the professionalism of its members and organised in close cooperation with MoD to ensure members of the industry were equipped with the latest information and technology.

When asked how the talk will benefit local companies, Mohammad Nazri said it would "opened up opportunities for local companies and local firms to determine business opportunities in this area of work." "Normally, if they see opportunities, they will work together with the foreign partner and eventually with the transfer of technology, they will be able to stand on their own.

And be able to perform what seems to be a complicated task that requires a lot of technology."

In the talk titled "The Day After Tomorrow", the speaker, Mark Simister, Director of Programme Management for MWH in Asia-Pacific, touched on the challenges faced by asset managers after catastrophic events as a result of natural disaster. The talk, which looks at disaster recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand and flood in Queensland, Australia, also deals with the way fundamental programme management principles and systems assisted in rebuilding these communities.

In PUJA press statement, it said that among the objectives of organising CPD talks was also in line with the aims and objectives of His Majesty’s government.

Present during the talk was Minister of Development, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman and other senior officials from the ministry. Also attending the talk were PUJA members, government departments and agencies, consultants, contractors and other relevant stakeholders.
